Sun protection matters for every child, regardless of skin tone — but getting sunscreen on a wriggling toddler is its own challenge. Many families know it’s important, but actually putting it on can turn into a battle. 

Toddlers are in a developmental stage where autonomy matters enormously. Anything that feels forced is going to meet resistance. Reframing sunscreen as something a child has some control over can make a real difference in cooperation.

• Offer choices. Asking a toddler which body part to start with — and which to do next — turns sunscreen into a game they're participating in rather than something being done to them.
• Make it a game. Singing a silly song, letting kids "paint" themselves, or making funny faces during application can turn a battle into a game.
• Use distraction. A favorite toy, book, or short video can buy just enough time to get the job done without a meltdown.
• Try doing it before getting dressed. Applying sunscreen before clothes go on means fewer missed spots, easier blending, and may be more comfortable for toddlers.
