Caring for the Umbilical Cord

The umbilical cord usually falls off between 1-4 weeks after a baby is born.  You do not need to use alcohol or any special lotions on the area.  Leave it alone – observation is the only care necessary.  Tuck your baby’s diaper below it so that it does not push against the skin and cause irritation.  You may notice a small amount of blood and oozing 1-2 days before the separation and 1-2 days after the separation.  If you notice a bad smell, significant bleeding, or redness around the umbilical area, notify your pediatrician.
