Summertime Arts and Crafts

We hope you’re spending the summer being creative! This DIY photo frame is a great way for kids to turn their nature walk into a work of art.

Arts and crafts are a great way to encourage creativity, decision-making and self-expression. Next time you and your child go for a walk, ask them to pick up the pebbles, leaves, acorns, shells, and flowers that catch their eye. Once they have a handful of treasures, you’re ready to start. Kids of all ages can help with this craft and it’s perfect for putting their souvenirs from the park to good use.

You will need:

  • A wooden photo frame
  • Glue or a glue gun
  • Items from your walk: pebbles, flowers, leaves, shells, etc.
  • Optional: glitter, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, paint or other decoration

Once your child has selected the pieces to use, start by gluing them one by one to the wooden frame. If you have superglue or a hot glue gun, make sure that you are the only one handling it. Encourage your child to decorate the pieces using their imagination: pipe cleaners can turn into miniature antennas or legs, glitter can look like the sun, or a coat of paint can make your frame a rainbow.

When the decorating is finished and the glue is dry, fill the frame with a photo from your summer, and display it for everyone to see!

A quick note…MSPC is going on vacation! We’ll see you in September with many more tips for the next season.
