Raising Grateful Children
June 14, 2018
It’s never too late to instill a sense of gratitude in your child. Start with these tips to encourage your child to show their appreciation.
1. Lead By Example
As with most things, kids learn from watching you. When a neighbor helps walk the dog, a waitress serves you food, or a stranger holds the door open, make sure to respond with a verbal and genuine “thank you”.
2. Set Limits
Although responsiveness and affection are signs of great parenting, don’t forget to have limits. When parents organize their whole lives around their child, that child will expect the rest of the world to do the same. And if kids feel entitled to all of their privileges, they won’t learn how to feel grateful.
3. Make Gratitude Part of Your Routine
When gratitude is part of their everyday lives, it’s an easier concept for kids to understand and internalize. Talk about things you’re thankful for with your child around the dinner table or before going to bed.
4. Donate and Share
After a holiday or a birthday, make a habit of donating toys or clothes your child no longer uses. Volunteering as a family is another great way to show that it’s important to make time to help others.
5. Encourage Creativity
Gratitude doesn’t have to come in the form of a thank-you note after a birthday party. Some kids might be more likely to express their thanks with a hug or picture. As long as children are learning how to be appreciative and give back, you are helping them build a grateful attitude towards life.
