How to Take a Baby’s Temperature

If your baby feels warm, take the temperature with a rectal thermometer.  Use some petroleum jelly to lubricate the tip of the thermometer, turn it on (usually by pressing once) and insert the metal portion.  When it beeps, remove the thermometer and clean.

A fever is a temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or above.  Call you doctor immediately if the baby has a fever.  Babies’ immune systems are not fully mature at this age and they need a full evaluation by a doctor when there is fever.
